Shortness of breath (dyspnea) in Fibromyalgia and Long Covid
In one of our recent long Covid research meetings, I was discussing the outlier pattern of shortness of breath occurring in up to 40% of long Covid patients.
Fibromyalgia is also associated with the feeling of dyspnea in up to 57.1% of patients which is unusual in a disease that does not directly involve the lungs.

Most of our research pointed to the long Covid being primarily involvement of the intestine.
What is the connection with the lungs?
The subjective feeling of dyspnea can be triggered by over reactivity of neuroepithelial bodies (NEB’s) in the lungs that cause the subjective sensation to occur.
On the opposite end of the spectrum was happy hypoxia in severe covid where the sensation of hypoxia was blocked with patients having very low saturations.
To compensate, there may have been an increase in the numbers of NEB’s with longer term issues with breathlessness.
