Spike Detox Is the Wrong Question — Immune Reset May Be the Better One

Why long COVID may not be only about what happened during the infection

Here is a recent conversation with Joachim Gerlach, one of the pioneers looking at finding ways to help patients improve.

One of the hardest things about long COVID is that many people are left with symptoms long after the original infection has passed. Fatigue. Brain fog. Palpitations. Gut disturbance. Exercise intolerance. For many, the standard tests are either normal or not abnormal enough to explain what they feel.

That does not mean nothing is happening. It may mean we are not yet measuring the right things.

One question I have been exploring is whether, in some people, the body remains in a prolonged immune response because it is still reacting to viral remnants, spike protein fragments, altered gut bacteria, inflammatory debris, or immune cells that have not returned to a resting state.

This is not a simple “one cause, one cure” problem. That thinking is too crude for long COVID. But one pattern keeps coming up again and again: the gut appears to be central.

The gut is not just a digestive tube. It is one of the largest immune organs in the body. If the gut remains irritated, the immune system may remain switched on, even when the original infection has passed.

This matters because chronically activated immune cells may struggle to shift into repair and clearance mode. Instead of restoring balance, the body can remain stuck in a loop of gut irritation, immune activation, inflammatory signaling, and persistent symptoms.

That is why I increasingly see gut support not as a side issue in long COVID, but as one of the first places to look. Not because everyone has obvious gut symptoms. Many do not. But because gut immune activation can be present quietly, underneath the surface.

The phrase “spike detox” is popular, but it is easily misunderstood. It can sound as if one supplement or one protocol simply removes spike protein from the body. I do not think that is how this works.

A more careful way to think about it is this: first reduce unnecessary immune activation, then support the gut barrier and microbiome, then support the body’s normal clearance systems. Only after that does it make sense to consider whether binders or other supportive approaches may help in the gut environment.

I have recently been looking more closely at humic substances and gut-focused binders in this broader conversation. The interesting idea is not that any product “cures long COVID.” That would be an irresponsible claim. The more measured point is that certain gut-active compounds may support the intestinal environment, mucous layer, bacterial balance, and binding activity within the gut lumen.

For people dealing with long COVID, the better question is not simply, “What removes spike?” The better question is, “How do we help the body move from chronic immune activation back into immune regulation and repair?”

That is where gut support becomes relevant.

For those in the UK, there is currently a limited opportunity to request a free sample of Molecusan Liquid Spectrum. You only pay shipping.

I am mentioning this carefully because this is not a treatment claim. It is not a prescription, not a cure, and not a substitute for medical care. It is simply an opportunity for people in the UK who are interested in gut immune support to try a sample while availability lasts.

The offer is available in the UK only, excluding Northern Ireland, and only for a short period.

If you are currently unwell, on medication, pregnant, immunocompromised, or under specialist care, speak to an appropriate clinician before adding anything new.

Long COVID has forced us to think differently. It is not enough to ask whether the virus is still actively replicating. We also have to ask whether the immune system is still reacting to remnants, debris, altered tissue signals, bacterial toxins, vascular inflammation, or gut immune activation.

My current view is simple. The gut is one of the most important places to start. Not because it explains everything, but because if the gut immune system remains inflamed, the rest of the immune system may struggle to reset.

And for many people with long COVID, that reset is what they have been waiting years to achieve.
