The Science Isn't Settled — But You Don't Have to Wait

Why I've translated the research on post-viral illness into something the average person can actually use — and where it leads next.

If your tests keep coming back “normal” while you know something is wrong — the fatigue that won’t lift, the fog, the gut that won’t settle, the crash after doing too much — this is for you.

Let me be honest first

The science of post-viral illness is not settled. We are still, genuinely, early in understanding what happens in the body after these infections. I don’t have all the answers, and anyone who claims they do should give you pause. What I have is a framework — a way of making sense of the patterns, built on the research we do have. I hold it as a hypothesis, not a certainty. But for a great many people, it’s the first thing that makes their experience make sense.

Built for the person living it

That framework normally lives in dense, specialist language. I’ve translated it into plain English, because I’ve come to believe the average person is far more capable of understanding their own body than the system assumes. Give someone a clear map — how symptoms sit on a timeline, why the gut so often comes first, how these patterns can lock into a self-reinforcing loop — and they can begin to see their own story. That’s what ROOT Foundations is.

For those who want to help others

Some people finish, and they don’t just understand their own health — they look at the people they love and think, I could help them. For anyone who feels that pull, there’s a next step: the full ROOT Academy, where I teach people to guide others carefully and properly. Not as doctors — as educators who work alongside medical care, never instead of it.

And for doctors, too

I’m also building a CPD program for clinicians. It’s still in development — I won’t claim an accreditation I haven’t yet earned — but the aim is to give doctors a structured way to think about these patients, so something shifts at the level of the consultation itself.

Understanding at every level

A problem this large will never be solved by a handful of specialists; there simply aren’t enough. What we need is understanding at every level — the person living it, the friend who wants to help, the trained guide, the doctor in the clinic — all working from the same map. A network of understanding, instead of a bottleneck of expertise.

I don’t know everything about this, and I’ll keep saying so. But leaving people alone and confused isn’t good enough. This is my attempt to change that.

🎧 The full reflection is in the audio above — about six minutes on why this matters, and where it’s heading.
