Right on Dr. McMillan! Glad to see you making this connection. Body awareness, a.k.a. somatic awareness, is a core principle of qigong and meditative movement practices and is linked both experientially and scientifically to decreases in symptoms.
My own lab at Dartmouth did a significant clinical trial where we studied the benefits of meditative movement in women with second hand smoke exposure. Here, where we combined body awareness with exercise, we saw dramatic beneficial changes.
The entire field of somatic psychology is also based on helping patients/clients address trauma through somatic 'experiencing'. A well received paper on this can be found here: Somatic experiencing: using interoception and proprioception as core elements of trauma therapy
But… what if you have long covid, and your CT scan and MRI results show you have shrunken hippocampus? Diagnosis: aMCI. This confounds your theory. NOT GOOD.
